How Rust Works

A lot of people know about rust. Rust, also known as Iron oxide happens when certain metal comes in contact with Oxygen and water, it won’t happen if it has no air. To test this you could fill a cup half way with water then let a nail sit in it for 1 or more days. When you come back it will have a reddish brown colour on it, that is called rust or Iron oxide.

Things only rust when they are made of a type of Iron such as steel or corrode. For example if you tried the previous test with plastic or paper it won’t rust. This happens because the chemicals in Iron can absorb Oxygen and it reacts with the water by making rust.

Rust is also a fungus that affects approximately 7000 different species. Plant rust is yellowy orange, it looks like little circular stains found on leafs. This rust can damage the fruit or the flower that the tree is making, plant rust can be passed across other nearby trees. The only way to get rid of plant rust is to chop it down.


Normal rust can be prevented and you can take it off with certain products but it is always better to keep your metal things under shelter and possibly get a dehumidifier because metal doesn't need strait water it can also be humid air that can rust things.

For Immersion on Wednesday we made Elephant Toothpaste, Elephant Toothpaste is chemical reaction that makes an explosion of foam. Elephant Toothpaste is made with Yeast, water, hydrogen peroxide, dish washing liquid and you can add food colouring  if you like. This is what it looks like--------------------------------------------------------------------> After we did the normal Elephant Toothpaste we tried changing some things like more yeast, less water and smaller bottle. we got into groups, each group changing something different, my group added more yeast and the results were that it didn't make much difference except that when we tried to put the yeast in it turned into a paste, like peanut butter. Elephant toothpaste is a chemical change because it is irreversible, it is an explosion of foam and it bubble and those are some reasons why it is a chemical change and not a physical change. Science in a van

On Thursday we had Science in a van, Science in a van is two people who teach children and adults about science. At the start of the day the whole school went to the front of the school and watched the show; first they put a table cloth and cups on top of the table cloth onto a table and quickly pulled down the table cloth so that the cups stayed on the table. Next he had a piece of cardboard with strings on it and he put a cup on top of the cardboard and spun the strings around, surprisingly the cup didn't fall off. Later, in the last block   all of LC7 went to Lc5 for science in a van. we learnt all about the periodic table and solids, liquids and gas we also learned about insta snow which is a powder that can soak up about 4 times its velocity.
